What about tradition? :O

"I ain't ever gonna fix that _______ a sandwich again, he don't own me!" (A random woman I heard talking on the phone)

Dudes, gentlemen and varied males of the world. A great crisis has befallen us; respect for the days of old has long vanished, replaced by a stubborn idealism. For you see, women do not want to marry, do not want to birth children, and most threateningly of all...women no longer want to make us sandwiches.
"How could this have happened?!", I am sure you are violently asking yourself, God, mother nature (who will definitely not answer you, not anymore) and myself. Well that is a complicated question, and it's as much our fault as it is theirs; it's the fault of our society really, we've made things this way.

Society was influenced by fairytales and Walt Disney; together they were the perfect conditioning tool. "Hello ladies, see that flawed male? See how ugly he is, or how stubborn or judgmental he is? See what happens when he isn't around you night and day? Why would you leave, you have the potential to change him! Just stay around him for a while, he'll become more attractive with time. He loves you! Don't you want to be saved, drawn away to nurture and care for him for the rest of your life? Don't you want to make him a sandwich?". We were content, women were intent on rescuing us from ourselves and raising us a second time; to them we were phoenixes that had to be killed violently, so that we could rebirth ourselves from the ashes of our flawed, masculine existences. And we were content; go to work while Lucy cleaned the house and raised the children, then come home when Lucy had dinner ready and the children were tired. And women, in the meantime, took pride in caring for a husband, house and family, It was the ideal, the goal to strive for, a perfect imitation of the varied animals in nature. But just because women wanted to marry, that did not mean men would want to. Women, however, had a secret that every potential suitor would do anything for, even marry.

Men are pushed on by the intercourse motive, and before, women would not have sex until marriage. Not the everyday respectable woman anyways (please keep in mind that I'm speaking of middle-high class citizens). Men were so tortured by sexual urges that they would do anything, ANYTHING to sate themselves. And women knew this, so they would use this to convince a man that marriage really was the best option, that they'd never survive without a woman's influence (included but not limited to her genitalia), and that they would complete the primitive man. Well man was indeed primitive, and his urge would assure him that marriage was indeed the due course, for satiation overruled freedom.

And society agreed; woman has always had strong influence over man. They had somehow managed to gear society towards marriage and the raising of children, despite the lifestyles of their ancestors (the greeks and romans, especially, had been freaks). For a man to have sex with a whore in a public manner was degrading to his status as an individual. Women who had sex before marriage were considered whores, baser life-forms that were no more cultured than dogs (influential or not, women still had it tougher...), and for a time women had decided that sex was for marriage, and men had decided that marriage was for sex. And society was content.

But then, the influence of feminism rippled through society. Women were tired of being housekeepers while man could go and enjoy life beyond the front door. The abilities of women had been proved thoroughly during WWII. And then women brought up...women issues. Periods, childbirth and common sense oh my! The burdens women lived with regularly made them stronger; more strong-willed and sensible than any man. "Why do we have to raise kids ALL of our lives? Why do men have larger paychecks?! They can't do what we do, they can't roll with us!". So, women aimed to go to college, to learn and apply and lead and control. Like all humans, they desired power; and power they would have! "Why gentlemen, look in this history book here...yes you see, Sheba and Cleopatra, Queens that controlled their lands and people. You didn't mention this during dinner, now did you?". But despite this trek for power, women still wished to eventually raise children, protect their sexual sanctity, live with -not under- a man, and die with a supportive husband after a few decades of being queens. Women would still make us sandwiches, we'd just have to wait a little longer.

But then media struck. Men still being dominant, and ready to make money, they began to use developments in home entertainment to sell sex, smokes and bottles. But especially sex, lots and lots of sexy models. And women, still eager to gain control, decided that maybe they didn't have to be married to have sex. "It's old-fashioned yeah, saving yourself? A whore is bought for sex, well I won't be bought! I'll use my body for power! That's what the Queens did! I won't be a whore, but a seductress;  a femme fatale." And so, women became looser, more willing to have sex, and men...well, they couldn't really argue could they?

As a result of this, women became less dependent on men. They could do their business whenever they please, and have some fun when they wanted to. Men, always the non-commiters, enjoyed themselves with this new-found age of sexual freedom and expression. And media reigned over all, making people more and more frivolous; "Eventually they'll settle down, wise up and marry...but while they're young, they're stupid!".

Homosexuality too, became an apparent and acceptable (on the right side of the country that is) element of society. Girls could date girls, guys could date guys and they'd be applauded for it. People became less caring, less judging and more willing.

These elements now, have dis-encouraged the times of old. Marriage is seen as either unnecessary or useless, the divorce rate has sky-rocketed, religion has given way to spirtualistic, agnostic and atheistic beliefs, and the rigid structures of our parents and grandsires have waned considerably.

So what does this have to do with us? Well gentlemen, the inconsideration for old views include an inconsideration for the over-caring spouse. Relationships now consist of two humans on a nearly even ground. But it isn't even, and women take note of that. They remember how things used to be, how much we suppressed and controlled, how many sandwiches we ate free gratis. They don't want to regress. Childbirth is excruciating, and it recalls the pain men have put women through over time. Marriage too, implied a control over a woman's life. And sandwiches...well, fill in that blank yourself.

Men and women are too fond of their freedoms, too succumbed by enjoyment to want to regress back to old-fashioned times. Life has become casual, and the structures of yesteryear are now seen as superfluous. We've created a new structure out of our lack of structure; men were so excited with the increase in sexual activity that we failed to pay attention to the deteriorating societal structure. Women were so eager for control that they trained to live without needing man as much as they once had. We've, to put it simply, become incredibly self-serving. And both genders are equally self-serving at that.

So in reality, both men and women are shying away from tradition. Women will not marry eagerly, will not look forward to birthing a child, nor suit themselves to men's whims. Men will not marry eagerly either, will oftentimes leave their children behind in the quest for enjoyment, and laze about instead of taking care of themselves. Our society has changed; is it for the better, or the worst?

  1. How ironic... you didn't even need to do the assignment yet you write much more than anyone who need to do the assignment.
